Buzios, the "Brazilian Himalayas"
The incredible rock formations present in the scenery of Búzios, give the city the title of “Brazilian Himalayas”. And such a comparison makes perfect sense: they indicate that the region was part of a gigantic mountain range more than 500 million years ago, when there was a collision of continental masses, similar to the one that gave rise to the Himalayas.
This collision did not form large mountains in the landscape of the peninsula, where, today, the altitude does not exceed 200 meters. But he presented the region with rocks of the most varied types that, when exposed, form unique mosaics.

Beaches and Viewpoints
The first part of the tour through the Geological Circuit, gives an overview of the city passing by some beaches and the main viewpoints of Búzios. Praia de João Fernandes, João Fernandinho, Mirante de João Fernandes, Praia Brava, Praia do Forno and Mirante do Forno are on the route, which has a stop at the viewpoints for photos.
Praia da Foca (Foca's Beach)
On the beautiful Foca’s Beach it is possible to observe the folded and foliated rock formations, as well as tectonic breccias, dikes and a small stone mangrove.
Ponta da Lagoinha
At Ponta da Lagoinha, where the landscape is framed by gigantic layers of rocks called by geologists as “foliated” and “folded”. The formations demonstrate the high pressures and temperatures to which they were subjected in the event of the collision.
In addition to the interesting geological aspects, the area, surrounded by the sea and the restinga vegetation, is considered a “portal of energy”, according to esotericists. This definition is due to the fact that the place aggregates countless forces of nature in such a harmonious way, being a suitable place for observation and meditation.
Pedra do Guardião (Guardian Stone) / Saco do Canivete (Pocket Knife Cove)
The last part of the Búzios Geological Circuit is made on foot, on a light, pleasant and shaded trail, which leads to Saco do Canivete, between the beaches of Ferradura and Ferradurinha.
The scenery is composed of rocky walls and immense cliffs with the blue sea in the background, as well as the Pedra do Guardião, a rock formation that is carefully sculpted that resembles the face of a man.
A reference point for studies related to the movement of tectonic plates and Pangea, the environment invites you to explore the rocks until reaching the “breather”, a kind of viewpoint between the stones with the right to shade and wind. There, the order is to sit a little, relax and contemplate.
