For an even more interesting experience, it is possible to do the Mangrove Circuit of Pedras + Ponta do Pai Vitório, in which you will also be able to discover a rare type of mangrove that only exists in 3 places in the world.

The history of Ponta do Pai Vitório

There are two interesting stories about the origin of the name of the Ponta do Pai Vitório. They were told by the quilombola leader and matriarch, known as Dona Uia (1941 – 2020), granddaughter of slaves and daughter of farmers, born in Quilombo da Rasa.

Both stories told by her, and which have been perpetuated until today, are based on a shipwreck that occurred near Praia Rasa, a place that became known for the arrival of trafficked slaves even after the trafficking was prohibited, on November 7, 1831.

In the first version, Dona Uia reported that “Pai Vitório”  (Father Vitório) was the name of a clandestine slave ship of Portuguese origin, which would have sunk near the tip on a winter night. The few survivors managed to escape to the sandbanks of Rasa, hiding behind the old Vila Verde farm.

The second version, told by Dona Uia, said that “Pai Vitório” was a young African, an expert swimmer, who was the only survivor of the shipwreck. Over time, he became known by this name. He became a preacher of the Christian faith, being a charismatic, respected and miraculous priest, who climbed to the top of the hill that now bears his name, lighting oil-based lamps to guide landings, avoiding strandings and shipwrecks.

The Africans who stayed on the farms in the surroundings left many descendants, responsible for the quilombos in the region. In honor of them, Praça Quilombola was inaugurated in 2018, in Arpoador da Rasa.
